The 10-episode series, directed by Hansal Mehta, on SonyLIV is one of the most gripping adaptations of a real-life event on screen. It follows the rise and inevitable fall of Indian broker Harshad Mehta, better known as “Raging Bull” in the country’s largest money market. The series is adapted from journalist Sucheta Dalal and Debashish Basu’s book “The Scam: Who Won, Who Lost, Who Got Away”, and is unlike any production you have ever seen – based on Mehta’s life. Directed by Sameer Hanchate, Gafla is a 2006 crime film based on the same 1992 stock market scam you saw this weekend on SonyLIV. The film highlights the main character, the unusual rise of Subodh Mehta (played by Vinod Sharawat) to the top of the stock market by doing various odd jobs, as well as alleged stock price manipulation and insider reaction, of course.

2. MONEY DIRTY – NETFLIX

Dirty money is a Netflix investigative documentary series that takes you through two seasons (with six-hour episodes per season) of unbridled corporate greed, scandals, embezzlement and fraudulent practices prevalent in some of the largest companies in the world. It explains how companies have been able to save face despite massive scandals, and what it takes for different governments to look the other way while continuing to profit. Some of its most gripping episodes include the Wells Fargo banking scandal, the infamous 1MDB corruption racket in Malaysia and the real estate empire of President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner.

Another investigative documentary series you need to stream on Netflix this week is Bad Boy Billionaires: India. The controversial series explores the lives of three of India’s most infamous tycoons, Vijay Mallya, Subrata Roy and Nirav Modi, and how their fraudulent expansion plans (once multi-crore businesses) have ruined the lives of nearly everyone those who worked for and with them.

4. THE WOLF OF WALL STREET – AMAZON PRIME VIDEO

Martin scorsese the wolf of Wall Street, with Leonardo DiCaprio in the lead role, is a terrific and true portrayal of Jordan Belfort’s nefarious career as a stockbroker in New York City. His company, Stratton Oakmont, engaged in rampant corruption and fraud on Wall Street and operated a boiler room in a penny scam. Stream the film on Amazon Prime Video to find out how he got caught up with various other colorful aspects of his life. Notably, Belfort spent 22 months in prison. In 2007, he published his memoirs, which serve as the plot of the film.

5. THE WASHER – NETFLIX

Produced in part by Netflix, Laundromat is an absolutely brilliant crime comedy that follows the life of an old widow (played by Meryl Streep) and how she continues to expose the world’s biggest insurance fraud, directed by two Panama City legal partners (played by Gary Oldman and Antonio Banderas). The three actors are joined by Jeffrey Wright, David Schwimmer, Matthias Schoenaerts, James Cromwell and Sharon Stone in this production.

6. JAMTARA: SABKA NUMBER AAYEGA – NETFLIX

Debit and credit card scams are rife in our country. This Netflix original is essentially a fictional series based on these scams. It focuses on two young men, who run a phishing scam from Jamtara, a small village in Jharkhand. When news of their actions surfaced in the country, this village found itself in the limelight with its elected officials.

7. THE INFORMER! – YOUTUBE

Inspired by a real life event, The informant! takes you on a hilarious tour of Mark Whitacre’s involvement in the lysine (an essential amino acid) price-fixing conspiracy of the mid-1990s, led by a group of five international companies. The film is based on a non-fiction book called “The Informant” by journalist Kurt Eichenwald, and stars Matt Damon as the whimsical whistleblowing Whitacre.
