Sunday’s next race comes after Lewis posted a statement on Instagram on Tuesday discussing the inclusion of minorities in motorsport.

In the post, which was a photo of him taking his knee before a race, he said: “I know there is still a long way to go to ensure diversity and inclusion in our sport.

“But I’m delighted to finally be able to share with you some of the things I’ve been working on to help make this change.”

“I will soon publish the findings of the Hamilton Commission that I launched last year to understand why there was so little black representation in motorsport.”

Lewis concluded: “I hope we can work together with the results to make this sport more accessible and diverse and ultimately more representative of the outside world.”

He is also getting closer to a new Mercedes contract that will extend the world champion’s record-breaking stay with the team for at least one more season.

Sources close to the negotiations told Sportsmail that a deal appears to be imminent, with an announcement expected before the summer break in August.

That was the schedule both sides set for what could be Hamilton’s final hurray in Formula 1.
