Leonardo DiCaprio is one of Hollywood’s favorite actors. Having performed in successful hits such as Titanic and the wolf of Wall Street, it’s easy to see why.
While many actors had to move to Los Angeles to break into the industry, DiCaprio never did. He was born and raised in LA, which meant Hollywood was in his backyard.
Sadly, DiCaprio grew up in a very difficult area of LA, due to his parents’ lack of money. However, DiCaprio assures that his unusual upbringing is what allowed him to become an actor.

DiCaprio spoke about his early days in a 2014 interview with the SAG-AFTRA Foundation.
“My parents were both from New York and they had this postcard image of utopia Los Angeles in Hollywood, and then we kind of went to the mecca of prostitution and drug addicts,” DiCaprio continued. “So that’s where I grew up and then later moved to Silver Lake and Los Feliz for a long time after that. … I’m from LA, I was born and raised here. … ”

In a separate interview with CBS Sunday Morning, DiCaprio revealed that he was robbed in his neighborhood when he was just five years old.
“I was kind of robbed when I was five, or something,” added DiCaprio. “It was a pretty hardcore neighborhood and I think that gave me a lot of motivation to be successful in some way.”
His mother made sure that the environment did not damage him
Even though DiCaprio grew up in a tough neighborhood, his mother never allowed him to consume it. She made him go to a big school, even though it was an hour from his house.
“I don’t want to do all this stupid rags to riches thing, but for the first 10 years my playground was like a dump with crack addicts around the corner,” DiCaprio said. Rolling stone. “I was walking down the street and there was a guy opening his coat with, like, needles and heroin. And the area was a mess. And there was also a lot of violence around. Nothing ever happened to me. And it’s good that I got to see that. And at the same time she took me every day to go to school with, well, basically a bunch of rich kids. [laughs].
Growing up in LA helped him become an actor
Looking back, DiCaprio believes it was his tough upbringing and loving parents that paved the way for his acting career.
“I always felt like this weird stranger. And I think if it wasn’t for the fact that I had a mother who really took the time to listen to a kid who said, you know ‘I want to do this for a living, that’s what I know what I want to do, it’s my passion ”- 10, 11 year old girl – if it had not been for her to take me to auditions in the pure proximity of being – to go to a school which m agreed to Beverly Hills, then able to drive down the valley or to Hollywood on the way home from school, I probably wouldn’t do that for a living.
Obviously, the theft did not have a lasting impact on DiCaprio’s life.
