More than a decade has passed since Christophe nolan made his debut with his exciting science fiction film “Inception”. The film was a box office hit, grossing nearly $ 1 billion worldwide.
Set in a world of dreams, “Inception” followed the story of a group of robbers specializing in infiltrating the minds of their targets to steal confidential information. It starred Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard, Elliot Page, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, all directed by Leonardo DiCaprio, who played the role of Dom.
Frankly, the film is one of Nolan’s signature works. Its action-packed scenes interspersed with jaw-dropping ideas captivated fans who watched the film, and it remains a classic to this day.
For DiCaprio, a scene from the film left a deep mark on him. Read on for more details.
Leonardo Dicaprio felt like part of a group of singers in “Inception”
From the start of the film, Nolan sought to make viewers travel to make them doubt reality. The film starred DiCaprio and his gang entering unknown depths of the dreamlike landscape. Each time they collapsed further, their costume would change to suit the scene they were portraying.
However, the last observable scene in the dream world occurred in a fortress built by DiCaprio’s target. The game was shot in the snow capped mountains of Calgary to really give it the look it wanted. In addition, the team was dressed in thick snowsuits and sophisticated tote weapons. In an interview for FilmFone in 2010, Page and DiCaprio joked about their costumes in the final scene.
Page asked if Dicaprio felt like he was in a Backstreet Boys music video. “I felt like we were part of a huge group of boys and we were right there on top of a snow-capped mountain,” DiCaprio said with a laugh.
Dicaprio explained why the mountain scene was difficult
Still, DiCaprio and Page moved from their costume to more serious things during the interview. They discussed the harsh weather conditions they faced while filming the final scene at the top of the mountain.
Then it was winter in Canada, which meant a subzero temperature and shortness of breath.
“We had to do really long dialogue strings, and we were all getting a little nauseous, and we were light-headed. But getting into those costumes was very locked in Chris Nolan’s imagination. DiCaprio called back.
He continued, “This is something he had been thinking about for a very long time. And I think it was really a leap of faith on our part to jump into those snow white suits. Ultimately, DiCaprio shared that he believes the role contributed to the film’s success.
The mountain setting
For most of the movies this decade, the producers use computer generated images (CGI) to create any backdrop needed in a movie. It avoids the need to use a physical location to shoot the movie because CGI can manufacture it.
However, for the mountain scene in “Inception,” the cinematographer Nolan; proposed the use of a physical location. They chose the Calgary peaks and the production team built the fortress near an old ski resort. This made the scenes shot on the mountain authentic and without the help of CGI.
Fans can remember the landslides that also happened. The production team used small incendiary devices to make sure they didn’t grow out of proportion. The crew and actors worked in the cold and wore snowsuits. In the end, it showed the level of dedication that went into making “Inception” the success it is today.
Leonardo Dicaprio thinks his ‘Inception’ character has come home
After the mountain scene, DiCaprio’s character, Dom, came out of the dream state with his team having completed their mission. He finally returned home after years of absence in a foreign country.
At the end of the film, the last scene showed Dom walking towards his children as his trusty totem pole – used by him to attach himself to reality falls and spins behind him. The film ended without the totem pole stopping. So no one could tell whether Dom was dreaming or not. However, DiCaprio assumed that his character had returned from the dream world.
“I had my own interpretation, and that’s what I came back to reality,” DiCaprio said. “I had to make my own choice on that one, yeah.” Regardless of DiCaprio’s perspective, fans are still debating the scene, as the outcome cannot be clearly stated.
