Irish Leona Maguire’s attempt to secure a debut LPGA victory failed as Nelly Korda took a two-stroke victory at the Meijer Classic in Michigan.
Maguire, 26, rolled a 66 under par of six to finish at 23 under par, but the American player’s 67 proved to be enough to hold up.
After 22-year-old Korda, three points after the third round, Maguire quickly equalized with three early birdies.
The pair remained tied at the turn but Korda birdied the 10th and 11th to take a lead she did not give up.
Korda’s eagle in the 14th par-five and birdie in the next increased her advantage to three, but it was reduced to a lone shot when the American bogeyed the 16th as Maguire landed a birdie putt of 10. feet.
However, Korda’s closing birdie secured his fifth LPGA victory and his second in 2021 after winning the Gainbridge event in February.
Maguire placed 20th in the LPGA standings this year and her latest strong performance – after finishing second in the Lotte Championship in April – will increase her chances of earning a spot on the European squad at the Solheim. Cup this season.
The opening rounds of 65 and 64 gave the Cavan player a three-stroke advantage midway through Michigan, but Korda’s magnificent 62 on Saturday saw her take three leads as Maguire could only score one. 70 in the penultimate lap.
Another American Brittany Altomare and South Korean In-Gee Chun shared third place, four behind Korda, while England’s Georgia Hall finished tied for sixth with 18 under after a closing 68.
Hall’s compatriot Charley Hull lost ground on the final day as a 70 left him 15th on 16 under.
