Following the launch of the adidas x Bob Marley third kit, Ajax will wear the jersey for the first time in the Champions League against Besiktas tonight.
Earlier this season, UEFA banned Ajax from wearing their Bob-Marley-inspired kit due to problems with the expression of the ‘Three Little Birds’ motif on the back, but now the team will be wearing their third kit in the Champions League for the first time.
The Dutch club have unveiled their new jersey featuring Jamaican singer Bob Marley’s iconic song ‘Three Little Birds’.
The black stripe, which features red, yellow and green details, is a tribute to the Dutch club’s fans’ love of reggae.
The track was adopted in 2008 following a pre-season friendly in Cardiff where the song was played over the speakers as Ajax fans were urged to stay in their seats.
Fans immediately fell in love with the famous song and have used the song as an anthem ever since, especially when Bob Marley’s son Ky-Mani sang along with them – we love to see him.
Marley’s daughter Cedella said: “I am more than touched that Ajax have chosen Three Little Birds and made it their anthem. Stories like this warm my heart and show how impactful songs like Three Little Birds can be.
“Football was everything for my father. To use his words: football is freedom.
To celebrate the kit’s first outing in the Champions League against Besiktas, there will be a number of locations where the ‘three little birds’ will appear in the coming days, starting with the birds flying over the iconic Westerkerk in Amsterdam. this evening.
This is quite unique as the church only flies the national flag on Liberation Day and when a royal baby is born – we assume Ajax is just as important!
Ajax have made their way to the group stage and are already qualified with 12 points to advance to the knockout stages of the Champions League.
