Leaked Toyota bZ3 images show new electric sedan for China

Toyota entered the world of fully electric vehicles last year with the bZ4X, and the Japanese automaker has made it clear that more electrification is on the way. Now it looks like the bZ3 sedan could be the next battery-electric model on sale.

The bZ3 has not been officially unveiled by Toyota, but Automotive News China leaked photos and information from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology have surfaced showing the car from different angles. As we understand, it’s based on the company’s e-TNGA platform and will, at least initially, be offered with rear-wheel-drive only.

This isn’t the first time information about new vehicles has been leaked by the Chinese government, but things like battery power, vehicle range or charging capacity aren’t mentioned. Details regarding the single electric motor have surfaced, however, suggesting that the bZ3 will be offered in two variants with 183 horsepower (136 kW) or 244 hp (182 kW). Regardless of power, top speed would be limited to 100 mph (160 km/h).

As for size, this electric sedan is 186 inches long, with a width of 72 inches and a height of 58 inches. Those stats put it between the Corolla and the Camry, though its 113-inch wheelbase is nearly identical to the Camry. The top-end model (top right) is expected to feature the highest power output with more features, including 18-inch wheels. The standard model (above left) gets 16-inch wheels and a rather no-frills look. There is no mention of price at this point.

The design language of this electric sedan is unmistakably similar to that of the larger Toyota Crown, which was unveiled in global markets in July. It’s also surprisingly similar to a bZ5 render we featured in May. And if you go back to the end of 2021, you will remember that Toyota dropped an electric bomb by previewing no less than 15 electric concept vehicles. Among them was the bZ SDN concept, and it looks like the bZ3 could be a production version of this particular model.

We should hear more about the bZ3 later this year, as it is set to make its official debut at the Guangzhou Auto Show in November.

By the end of the decade, Toyota wants to launch 30 new electric vehicles and will invest $70 billion in research and development.
