The Lakers enter the new season with a revamped squad that is still led by two of the best players in the game. LeBron James is still considered one of the best despite spending time with his father behind him. Anthony Davis is the second half of the dynamic duo that led the team to a championship two seasons ago.
Davis was absolutely dominant in that championship race, but last season was a different story. His inability to consistently produce raised questions as to whether he was the top 5 player. The Lakers big man was recently criticized by a former LeBron teammate.
While on the No Chill Podcast with Gilbert Arenas, former Cleveland Cavalier and 2016 NBA Champion Richard Jefferson called Davis a top 5 talent instead of a top 5.
“Nobody calls him one of the top five players. They call him one of the top five talents. One of the most disrespectful things is a top five talent. The reason I call you one of the top five talent and not one of the top five players is because the top five players do it every night.
Jefferson went on to list those who he said were the top 5 players who could influence the outcome of a game every night: Giannis Antetokounmpo, Steph Curry, LeBron James, James Harden and Kevin Durant.
One of the main reasons the Lakers took an early exit in last year’s playoffs was Davis’ lack of production on the field. He just wasn’t the same back then or in the regular season. Despite all the experience and talent the team have added in transforming their roster, AD will need to step up their efforts this season if they hope to play another championship.
Of course, staying healthy would go a long way towards achieving that goal, as he only played 36 games before coming back in time for the playoffs. There is no doubt that Anthony Davis can be one of the top 5 players in the NBA, it’s just a matter of whether he can play consistently like night after night.
