Marcel Desailly believes that Kylian Mbappe could play his football in Saudi Arabia next season rather than in Madrid.

The French superstar will be one of the most talked about stars in the world this summer when his contract with Paris Saint-Germain ends, meaning he will be free to join the club of his choice.

Mbappe would have hoped to achieve Champions League glory in his final season at the club, however, a defeat against Borussia Dortmund means that dream will not come true until he moves on.

The striker is expected to join Real Madrid this summer – a team who are one game away from meeting Dortmund in the Champions League final – but according to Desailly, Mbappe could still choose to move to Saudi Arabia.

Talk to be in sportsDesailly said: “I’ve said it before, I would move to another continent. For him, I’m not sure Madrid is the right place for him.

“We have Vinicius on the left side, a player who shows Bellingham’s quality, so he won’t be the full number one they want.

“He doesn’t announce where he’s going and even if he wants to keep him and announce him as a star, there must be something behind it, a surprise.

“If you think about the business of football, for £350 million I would go to Saudi Arabia for a year and then come back next season – the year of the World Cup – at 26-and-a-half years old, I would take it and play football, because what does Mbappe want? He wants to play football.

Asked for his prediction of Mbappe’s move to Saudi Arabia, Desailly added: “That’s what I feel and what I think as a businessman and looking at the business side of things.

“It’s always competitive in Saudi Arabia… Broadcasters come to show the matches all over the world.

“They are doing what Qatar did in 2004 or 2005 and I went there to promote and expose the country.

“It’s a matter for both sides and I think it could be an opportunity for him to do more business and play more football after the Euros.”

Mbappe has already snubbed what seemed like an inevitable decision at the Bernabeu after surprisingly deciding to sign a new contract with PSG at the 11th hour two summers ago.

Whatever Mbappe decides to do next, his fellow World Cup winner with France, Thierry Henry, believes the 25-year-old will go down as PSG’s greatest player of all time.

Henry told CBS Sports: “We all know he was leaving. He was magnificent for Paris Saint-Germain.

“It’s not easy, it’s your last match in Europe for Paris Saint-Germain but he can leave this club with his head held high. Not everyone can win everywhere and especially the Champions League . Only Real Madrid wins it at will.

“But the big man played very well at Paris Saint-Germain throughout his career there. I’m not going to judge him for not winning the Champions League with Paris.

Asked if he thought Mbappé was PSG’s greatest player, Henry replied: “It’s not even a discussion, he’s No.1.

“With the impact he had all over the world, what he did, for me yes, he will go down as the best player to ever play for Paris Saint-Germain.”
