Kuo: Apple headset shipments potentially delayed until second half of 2023

According to the latest information shared today by technology analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, mass shipments of Apple’s AR/VR headset may be delayed until the second half of 2023 due to unspecified “software issues”.

Kuo said mass shipments of components for the helmet are still expected to begin in the first half of 2023, but he believes mass shipments of fully assembled helmets may not begin until the second half. This delay could lead to the headset launching in the second half of 2023, even if Apple announces it earlier in the year.

WWDC 2023 in June would be an opportune time for Apple to announce the headset, along with an SDK allowing developers to build AR/VR apps for the device.

Kuo has previously claimed that Apple plans to unveil the headphones at a media event in January and begin mass shipments in the second quarter of 2023. Kuo isn’t sure if the delay will cause the January announcement to be delayed, but he noted that too long a period between a media event and mass shipments can hurt sales.

Apple’s headphones are expected to be an expensive niche product, with Kuo predicting the company will ship fewer than 500,000 headphones in 2023.
