Krack: Walking penalty "very difficult" after F1 China "chain reaction"

Stroll hit Ricciardo under the safety car as the field regrouped in the penultimate corner for a restart on lap 27.

The stewards blamed Stroll entirely for not taking more precautions to avoid contact and gave him a 10-second penalty and two penalty points, which Stroll considered “a joke”.

His team leader, Krack, supported the Canadian and questioned why such a quick verdict was delivered shortly after the incident.

“A very, very quick verdict without really understanding… I thought it was a very, very quick and very hard, very quick decision,” Krack said when asked by Autosport about the punishment.

“I think it was a chain reaction in the end. You saw Fernando [Alonso] lock and another car behind and I think everyone was a bit trapped.

“I wish it had been looked at in a little more detail. We tried to discuss it, but the verdict very quickly was that Lance was responsible. And he got a 10-second penalty, in addition to the penalty. Damage to the front wing.”

Ricciardo was particularly frustrated that Stroll had avoided responsibility for the clash, although he stressed that the Aston driver was looking at the apex of Turn 14 rather than what was happening in front of him.

“These situations are created at the front,” replied Krack. “Now you can always say that you have to be more careful.

“But, on the other hand, if you’re too careful and you restart and you lose more than a car length, everyone says ‘are you sleeping?’

“Things like this happen on different tracks. You remember the incident we had at Mugello [at the 2020 Tuscan GP]where many cars were involved.

“It’s always the erratic movement that happens when a safety car restarts. And we have a few of those every year and we’ll continue to do that.”
