Kim Petras and Sam Smith just made Grammys history.
Kim Petras has become the first transgender woman to win a Grammy for Best Pop/Duo Performance. Beat from the likes of ABBA, Coldplay and BTS, Post Malone and Doja Cat, and Camila Cabello and Ed Sheeran, Petras shared awards with Sam Smith for the song “Unholy.” It was Sam Smith’s fifth Grammy Award.
“Sat graciously wanted me to accept this award because I am the first transgender woman to win this award,” Petras said to enthusiastic applause.
Winning for “Unholy,” which was incread on Smith’s 2023 album, GloriaPetras dedicated the award to other transgender people artists and pioneers who paved the way for its accomplishment, in particular Sophie. “I want to thank all the amazing trans legends before me who opened these doors for me so I could be here tonight,” she said. “Sophie, especially my friend who died two years ago, who told me this would happen and who always believed me. Thank you very much for your inspiration, Sophie.
Scottish pop innovator Sophie died two years ago after falling from a two-story roof. Sophie was a legendary transgender artist who rose to fame with singles like “Beep” And “Lemonade.”
