As the school year draws to a close and the KickStart Kids competitions come to an end, that doesn’t mean it’s too late to get your child involved in all the kicking fun.
Master Benjamin Mendez stopped by to tell us about their performances at state championships recently, where a few kids won medals and state titles. But he says that even after this pressure-filled event, the year is not yet over for his students.
“We have black belt testing, my daughter Grace Mendez will test her first degree black belt, then Christopher Price will test her second degree black belt through the Kickstart Kids program. They’ve already done the first step, the preliminary testing…then, if they’re approved, they move on to the actual testing,” Mendez said. “It’s in front of a black belt board, we bring in instructors from the Brazos Valley, sometimes from Houston, to make judgments.”
They will also have the annual sash ceremony for all students, which will take place on Thursday, May 19.
And with all their success over the past few years, they recently got a brand new dojo, thanks to ongoing bond project renovations at Navasota Junior High School. If you’re wondering how it worked for them…
“The Chuck Norris Dojo is awesome. We have our new home there, everyone is welcome to come and have a look. The kids love it, it’s 2,000 square feet of floor space that we really needed to be able to do what we do,” Mendez said.
