Kevin de Bruyne doesn’t think Belgium are one of the favorites to win the World Cup this year.

The Red Devils finished third in 2018 but the Manchester City star doesn’t seem convinced they can go all the way this time around.

De Bruyne is in his third World Cup with Belgium

Belgium won 1-0 in their opener against Canada, although the performance of Roberto Martinez’s side was far from convincing.

De Bruyne, who was named Player of the Match, has since shared his thoughts on their chances at this year’s tournament, and the 31-year-old doesn’t seem optimistic.

“I think our chance was in 2018,” he said in an interview with The Guardian.

“We have a good team, but it is getting old. We have lost key players.

“We have good new players coming in, but they’re not at the level of other players in 2018. I see us more as underdogs.”

Belgium beat England in the third-place playoff four years ago after being knocked out by eventual winners France in the semi-finals.

Belgium were second against Canada on Wednesday, but a missed penalty from the opposition and a fine strike from Michy Batshuayi secured victory.

They will next face Morocco and then Croatia in their final Group F fixtures with the aim of advancing to the knockout stages for a third tournament in a row.

De Bruyne has scored twice in previous World Cups and is hoping to add more to his tally.

However, even though they still have Eden Hazard, Toby Alderweireld and Thibaut Courtois at their disposal, he is not confident in their ability to lift the trophy for the first time in their history.
