Saturday’s battle between No. 2 Auburn and No. 12 Kentucky featured a surprising amount of quality defense in the first half, as the Wildcats used a 15-5 point advantage on turnovers to take a lead. 33-29 at halftime. They opened up a 19-9 lead early, but the Tigers rallied late in the half thanks to a solid effort from Walker Kessler.

Kessler dived twice in the final minute of halftime to send the Tigers into halftime with some momentum in front of a raucous crowd at Auburn Arena. Still, for the SEC’s top two offenses, the limited number of hits from those ends came as a surprise. Kentucky freshman guard TyTy Washington left the game at 8:20 of the first half after appearing to twist his left ankle while landing after a shot attempt.

A victory for the Tigers (17-1, 7-0) would be their 15th straight and give them a strong record to pass Gonzaga for the top spot in the polls on Monday. A victory for the Wildcats (15-3, 5-1) would finally give their resume some pep as they enter the encounter projected as just a No. 5 seed for the NCAA Tournament in Jerry Palm’s Last Bracketology.
