Kell Brook gave a glimpse of what it was like to step into the ring with Gennady Golovkin in 2016 and admitted he “saw stars” during his fight.
The Brit took on the much-revered middleweight at the O2 Arena for the WBC, IBF and IBO titles, with Brook moving up two weight divisions to fight.
GGG was undefeated at the time, as was the British boxer, who held the IBF welterweight title.
Golovkin proved too good for Brook and knocked him out in the fifth round – and there’s no shame in that with the Kazakh boxer knocking out all comers except Canelo Alvarez over the course of of his legendary career.
“I used to see stars sometimes,” Brook told talkSPORT Breakfast. “It was fantastic to be there with such a superstar and to feel the power and the weight.
“He’s a comeback fighter, Golovkin, everyone knows that who knows boxing. He’s a real badass.
“It was a great experience to fight him with all those belts at the O2 Arena. That atmosphere was epic.
“When I exchanged a few snaps with him, I could feel the roar of the fans. I could feel it in there.
Brook will fight Amir Khan in their long-awaited grudge match on February 19, which you can listen to live and exclusively on talkSPORT.
The 35-year-old joined talkSPORT Breakfast to discuss the fight and says he was disrespected by Khan.
When asked what he thought of his opponent’s lack of respect, he replied: “It’s irritating that another fellow Brit, or any fighter overseas or not, [would do that]. We step into this ring and risk our lives.
“I went to America and won a world title, jumping weights to fight Golovkin. I was never really given the props for that.
“Any fighter at any level should give that respect. We know how hard it is and what we have to do to get in that ring and go fight.
“It’s just disrespectful. He’s in cloud peekaboo country. He believes all the hype about his backslappers and I want to punch him in the face and show that I’m the governor there and the governor of welterweight in Great Britain.
