Keith Urban Talks the Extraordinary Taylor Swift and His Ariana Grande Obsession (Exclusive) – PEOPLE

Keith Urban has nothing to say about Taylor Swift — and that’s a huge compliment.

The country singer, who spoke with PEOPLE after announcing his Las Vegas residency, has long been a fan of Swift. However, there just ran out of superlatives for the “So High School” singer following the release of her The Department of Tortured Poets album.

“I mean, my God, Taylor’s writing is so amazing. There are really no adjectives for it,” Urban told PEOPLE. “She is a very great writer. This new album is therefore further proof of that, in many ways.

While Urban listened to Swift’s latest creation, he had a lot of fun with Ariana Grande’s latest single, “We Can’t Be Friends,” likening it to a drug.

“I don’t know what’s going on with this song, but I can’t stop playing it. It’s like audible heroin. Literally, I have to have another shot,” he said. “I play this thing over and over again.”

Luckily for Urban, he saw Grande perform “We Can’t Be Friends” at the Met Gala on May 6, which he attended with his wife, Nicole Kidman.

Grande’s song, released in March, has “real heavenly magic,” Urban said, adding, “It’s my absolute obsession song right now.”

His daughters, Sunday, 15, and Faith, 13, weren’t even the ones who pushed him to listen to Grande’s song.

“I always loved Ariana anyway,” Urban told PEOPLE. “She doesn’t sound like anyone. She’s like Taylor. I like singers whose voice you know instantly, and there are a lot of other singers that sound like them, but they don’t sound like anyone.”

Urban adds: “Ariana has always had this unique vocal gift. On top of that, she’s a phenomenal writer and producer. So it was easy for me to come across this new album. I was interested in it before it came out .”

Urban also released a new song, having released “Go Home WU” featuring Lainey Wilson last Friday. This song and many others are sure to be featured in Urban’s 10-show Las Vegas residency, dubbed “High,” at the BleuLive Theater in Fontainebleau.

“Go Home WU” is the third single he released from this upcoming album.

“I’m very relieved to be releasing new music and I’m really excited for the rest to be coming out,” he says.

Urban will perform at the Théâtre BleuLive in Fontainebleau on October 4, 5, 9, 11 and 12; February 14, 15, 19, 21 and 22
