Katy Perry is under fire for voting for billionaire Rick Caruso in the Los Angeles mayoral race.
The 63-year-old politician changed his party affiliation to Democrat in January, after supporting Republican candidates for years.
Meanwhile, Caruso – the owner of The Grove mall in Los Angeles – donated nearly $1 million to Senator Mitch McConnell and former President George W. Bush, who supported anti- abortion.
Free Travon Comedian tweeted Monday after learning of Perry’s vote, “Even if the right tries to spin it, Katy Perry voting for Rick Caruso is no indication of anything other than a wealthy white woman voting for a fake Democrat who doesn’t will ultimately have no effect on the quality of his life, but will make the lives of many others worse.
Another critic added, “katy perry tweeting a pro-choice video while voting for rick caruso would be objectively hilarious if it weren’t painfully stupid.”
A third wrote“Katy Perry voting for Rick Caruso for mayor of Los Angeles is incredibly disappointing. Please vote for Karen Bass, a community-oriented politician, not a businessman with a redundant platform on the homelessness and a history of donating to anti-choice organizations and initiatives.
Perry, 38, announced on Monday that she was voting for Caruso via Instagram.
The “California Girls” singer posted a slideshow of photos of herself from an LA voting center while giving a thumbs up, and captioned it, “🇺🇸I vote for a myriad of reasons (see the news) but especially because Los Angeles is a hot mess vending machine. #letsgocaruso #yestomeasure28 #yestomeasure1 #doyoubutjustuseyourvoteok🇺🇸.”
However, soon after Perry began to get criticized, she turned off the comments.
This isn’t the first time the “Dark Horse” singer has let her fans know who she plans to vote for in the mayoral race.
In June, Perry tweeted“RICK CARUSO FTW❗️” and was also criticized.
“Baby, he’s an anti-abortion billionaire building malls,” one person tweeted in response at the time. just another one asked“So you’re anti-choice?”
According to the LA Times, Caruso has pledged $1 million to support abortion rights since becoming a Democrat, but has yet to make the donation.
Perry’s rep did not return our requests for comment on the backlash the “American Idol” judge received for his vote.
However, Perry isn’t the only celebrity to publicly support Caruso.
Chris Pratt posted on his Instagram Stories on Sunday that he endorses the businessman for mayor of Los Angeles because he’s a “builder” who “knows how to do things.”
In May, Kim Kardashian shared on her Instagram Stories that she met Caruso and decided to support him because he can “really help with crime” and “homelessness.”
“I think with him he can provide a better path to a better life,” the Skims founder said.
“Kim, it was a privilege to speak with you and your family about the policies I intend to implement as mayor,” Caruso said. tweeted alongside a snippet of Kardashian’s video at the time.
“We have to do better. This is our hometown, and we need to take care of our town and its people. Thank you for your confidence. I won’t let you down. #CarusoCan”
Caruso is running against Joe Biden-endorsed candidate, Congresswoman Karen Bass.
