In 2018, Katy Perry did what most singers do in the midst of a lull in their music career: joined american idol as a judge. Now, five years later, rumors are swirling that Perry wants to quit the show because she’s angered that the show’s producers and editors called her a “mean judge.”
According to a Monday report in the Daily Mail, sources say that after a controversial season that saw Perry go viral for “mother-shaming” a 25-year-old contestant who had three children, the singer “feels like [the producers] threw her under the bus” and that her comments that got her in trouble with fans “could have been taken down.”

Perry’s viral exchange with young mom Sara Beth Liebe, who abruptly quit the show in the middle of Hollywood Week, then posted a TikTok calling out Perry for appearing to poke fun at a young woman already having multiple children , has not even been the only controversy this season. His jokes and criticism of the contestants were met with boos and pushbacks from Idol fans, and according to the Daily Mail, Perry has reached a tipping point. Of course, in his first season in 2018, Perry sparked memorable controversy by kissing a contestant without his permission when he revealed he had never been kissed before. “I was a little uncomfortable,” continued the candidate. New York Times. “I wanted to keep it for my first relationship. I wanted it to be special.
“Katy has become aware of the harsh criticism,” the Mail’s source said. “Getting booed really upset her. She was trying to stay in her lane, do her job, and go home. Aren’t we all!
According to the source, Perry fears her career and legacy will be tarnished as she is “now seen as a mean reality TV judge.” Perry reportedly received $25 million a season as a judge on the competition show, but her desire to walk “isn’t about the money” – rather, the source says, it’s “more of an issue of legacy” because she “doesn’t want her career defined by a talent contest show where she doesn’t even perform.
If Perry wants out, I have to wonder what’s next for her. The singer hasn’t released a hit in years. Her most recent efforts to turn to politics by endorsing pro-cop, anti-abortion billionaire Rick Caruso for mayor of Los Angeles last year resulted in Perry being heckled so widely on social media that she had to limit comments on his posts. Perry, of course, is already very rich and will inevitably remain so as we all continue to stream her old hits, which is to say she could just walk away Idol and continue doing nothing.
Or she could just stay in the cushy gig and agree to be the Simon Cowell of the three. A separate source speaking to PageSix appeared to refute the Daily Mail’s report of Perry’s alleged frustrations with the show: “Katy is not fazed by the backlash,” they said. “It’s been a rollercoaster season with a lot of talent, so she’s just doing her job.” ”
Whether she stays or goes, the drama she generated around the mostly outdated reality competition has probably garnered the most attention in years, so congratulations to her, at least, on this win.
