Katy Perry and Thomas Rhett caused a stir at the 56th annual CMA Awards. Making her CMA Awards debut, Perry teamed up with Thomas Rhett to perform their pop-country collab, “Where We Started,” on Wednesday night’s star-studded show.
Perry was dressed in a long denim dress and signature black cowboy hat for the performance, while Thomas Rhett opted for a sleek leather jacket.
The soulful melody of “Where We Started” had the crowd on their feet and in their feelings as they enjoyed themselves to the sweet song.
The couple’s performance comes just weeks after the music video for the hit song was released. The ethereal visual sees the pair sing to each other after an intense walk through the leaves forces them to meet.
In April, Thomas Rhett spoke to ET about the collaboration and how it came about.
“I did not participate in this. My label called her and said, ‘Do you want to do a collaboration with Thomas Rhett?’ and I thought they were crazy,” the 32-year-old singer told ET backstage at the CMT Music Awards. “I was like, ‘She has no idea who I am.’ They sent it to her and she loved the song.
The “Slow Down Summer” singer also opened up about meeting Perry and how she took the song to the next level.
“She loved the song and the next week she put her loop on it and picked it up and I was like, ‘That’s what it was supposed to be,'” he said of the Perry’s verse.” And since we shot a music video, we finally got to meet her in person. She’s as sweet as can be and I just think she took this song from good to great.
The show also saw performances from Carrie Underwood, Jimmy Allen, Kelsea Ballerini, Luke Bryan, Kelly Clarkson, Hardy, Marcus King, Miranda Lambert, Carly Pearce, Morgan Wallen, Lainey Wilson, Zac Brown Band, Brothers Osborne, Brandy Clark, Luke Combs, Caylee Hammack, Cody Johnson, Elle King, Patty Loveless, Ashley McBryde, Reba McEntire, John Osborne, Pillbox Patti, Chris Stapleton, Cole Swindell, The Black Keys and The War and Treaty.
The 2022 CMA Awards, hosted by two-time CMA Entertainer of the Year winner Bryan and NFL star Peyton Manning, aired live from Nashville on Wednesday, Nov. 9 at 8 p.m. ET on ABC. The show will also be available to stream Thursday on Hulu.
