Katy Perry and Kesha are facing backlash over lyrics referencing infamous serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer following the release of the Netflix series, Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.
Twitter users called out Perry’s 2013 track Dark Horse and Kesha’s 2010 song Cannibal for their mention of the notorious killer in a slew of tweets.
Kesha sings in her track “I’ll pull a Jeffrey Dahmer” while Juicy J, who stars in Dark Horse, says “She eats you like Jeffrey Dahmer”.
‘It’s so disrespectful to the victims’ families’: Katy Perry and Kesha face backlash over lyrics referencing serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer after hit Netflix series about murderer released
‘It always upsets me when I hear the line from the Dark Horse song ‘She eats you like Jeffrey Dahmer’ and I always spin my daughter to the station. It’s so disrespectful to the families of the victims. I hope people will remember this while watching Netflix. Sorry for their losses,” one Twitter user tweeted.
Another Twitter user called Katy to apologize for the “despicable” and “terrible” lyrics.
‘Why isn’t anyone calling out Katy Perry for allowing such vile and terrible lyrics to be included in one of her hit songs? Jeffrey was a notorious serial killer and Katy chose to romanticize his criminal and inhumane actions. In fact, I have a stomach ache. She MUST apologize.
Juicy J was also called out for singing the lyrics.
‘knowing the depths of what jeffrey dahmer did…juicy i’m wrong for what he said in that katy perry song,’ posted another.
Not happy: Twitter users expressed outrage at the lyrics after the Netflix series was released
A Twitter user said he would remove Cannibal from his playlist.
“I just found out who Jeffrey Dahmer is and I knew his name was familiar because Kesha put his name in her lyrics for her song ‘Cannibal.’ I have to delete this song now. Why the hell are we giving these sick people fandom!? Of course, Netflix is making a series out of it. Murders make the (stack of dollars emoji),’ the enraged fan posted.
“The flippant mention of Jeffrey Dahmer in Kesha’s cannibalistic song never really penetrated until now and what is it,” tweeted another.
What!? There were also Twitter users who criticized those who were outraged by the years-old songs.
But there were also those slamming Twitter users, suggesting they only attack songs to stay “relevant”.
‘The song was trending 2 F**KING YEARS ago and NOBODY noticed the lyrics. Now there’s a documentary about Jeffrey Dahmer and suddenly everyone is upset and attacks Kesha. 90% of people don’t even care to want to be involved,’ one Twitter user pointed out.
“Really weird that you’re so young the only reason you know who Jeffrey Dahmer is is because of this Netflix series and now you want to be relevant saying how offensive songs came out 10 years ago Sorry Snowflakes, too late for that,” another tweeted.
Dahmer, who became known as the Milwaukee Cannibal, wreaked havoc on the Wisconsin town from 1978 to 1991, killing 16 boys, teenagers and men over 13 years.
The monstrous murderer also committed necrophilia and cannibalism, and would dismember and preserve many parts of his victim’s body.
His gruesome crimes are now being chronicled in an all-new 10-part Netflix show called Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, which premiered September 21 and stars Evan Peters, Niecy Nash, Molly Ringwald and Richard Jenkins.
