The single marks the first collaboration between Perry and Alesso

Katy Perry and Alesso has released new single “When I’m Gone,” an electro-pop space dance track that marks the DJ’s first collaboration with the pop star.

“When I’m Gone” is Perry’s second single released this year, following “Electric”, released in May as part of the Pokemon 25 soundtrack. It is Alesso’s fourth single of the year, and it follows “Chasing Stars”, a collaboration with Marshmello featuring James Bay.

Perry and Alesso spoke with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe on Wednesday about the new song, with Perry telling Lowe that Alesso came to her with the track nearly a year and a half ago. She told Lowe she wasn’t sure if she was ready to collaborate given her Las Vegas residency shows being prepped, but, as she puts it, “[The show] is so big and wild that we wanted to inject some new blood into it. I was like, I have the perfect time to release a dance song that’s so fun and up, up, up. And then also with the music video coming, I’m just gonna go for it.

Alesso also praised Perry’s songwriting skills. “I like when artists get more involved and have pointers because that’s a collaboration,” he said. “It’s not fair that I’m doing the song. I have to say that Katy was definitely very perfectionist, and I love that.

The two are set to create a music video for the track on ESPN at halftime of the 2022 NCAA National Championship football game on January 10.

Perry is set to kick off her Vegas residency on Wednesday night, and it’s set to run through March 19, 2022. She shared the setlist for her residency’s opening night on Tuesday night.
