Kate Winslet has revealed her daughter Mia Threapleton gave her acting advice while filming the TV family drama I Am Ruth.
The actress, 47, stars on the Channel 4 show with her real life daughter Mia, 22, and has been promoting it ahead of its release later this month.
Kate portrays worries mum Ruth, who is trying to help her teenage daughter Freya (Mia) through a mental health crisis after being consumed by social media pressures.

Kate said working with Mia was “amazing” and she was “blown away” by her performance.
She explained that instead of giving advice to Mia, it was her daughter who directed her during filming.
Speaking to Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg, Kate said: ‘It was amazing, and she would have days when she would say ‘I can’t think of anything, I don’t know what to say, I don’t know what I’m going to TO DO.”

“And I would say don’t worry, I can’t think of anything, I don’t know what to say, I don’t know what I’m going to do.
“It just meant that we held hands a lot more. I was so blown away by her. She didn’t need my help at all.
‘Sometimes I could show a technical trick, which I had learned along the way. Little things that nobody teaches you, and she enjoyed that kind of stuff, but when it came to acting, she was going for it, I got it, I’m fine.

She continued, “Sometimes she would tell me things like when you come in and you do that, you can…and I’ll be fine!”
“It was great and we had the added benefit of knowing how to push each other’s buttons, which I can tell you we can do very well and used that resource tremendously during filming.”
It comes after Kate appeared on Lorraine on Thursday, where she said Mia didn’t need his advice and even told him to “shut up”.

The proud mother said her daughter had a ‘power’ that she herself never had as a young actress as she opened up about her experience working with Mia.
She explained: “As far as performance goes, she didn’t need me at all. There are even times when she would look at me and say, “Shut up mum, let me do it!”
“It was truly amazing to work alongside her and to be blown away by her courage…she is very, very powerful.”
“I think this younger generation of actors, I have to say there’s a naturalism to their acting and they’re just braver,” she added.
“They have a voice, they speak for themselves and they have a power that I feel I never really had.”

The Mare of Easttown star also admitted there was “some overlap” between her real-life role as Mia’s mother and her role as on-screen parent in the drama.

“Naturally there was going to be some degree of overlap. We just wanted to do something that would hopefully resonate with people,” she said.
She then opened up about her own parenting experiences and admitted it can be ‘really hard’ to walk away and let the children make their own choices.
“It’s very, very hard to believe that they know how to take care of themselves these days and how to take care of themselves…just what to say,” she said.
“Sometimes you just have to let them and walk away, and as a parent, that’s very difficult.”
I Am Ruth is part of the Bafta-nominated, female-directed drama anthology series I Am, created by filmmaker Dominic Savage.
The fictional script for the two-hour show, which examines the mental health crisis affecting young people in the UK, was developed and co-written by Winslet and Savage.
