K-pop idol Somyi becomes model after failed music career

A South Korean K-pop idol has started a new career as a steamy webcam model after her music career failed to take off.

Ahn Somyi recently split from her girl group DIA after years of declining sales that saw their last five singles miss the top 100 on the charts.

Just days after announcing her departure, it was revealed that the 21-year-old was working as a streamer on adult cam site Panda TV.

Panda TV is similar to other streaming services like Twitch, but it offers more adult content than its heavy gamer rivals.

However, despite its sleeker nature, it’s still a lot more tame than Western platforms like OnlyFans.

So far, Somyi’s streams appear to consist of the former K-pop idol chatting with fans and performing choreography with high necklines and short skirts.

Despite the shock of his radical career change, most DIA fans have supported Somyi on social media.

“Somyi is finally making money!” One gushed, while another tweeted, “Good for her.”

‘Somyi is an adult, I believe in her choices. Hope she is still protected, ”wrote another.

“The Queen needs to get her bag somehow. Hope Korean fans don’t hate her, ”added one.

Most fans had long suspected that Somyi had quietly left DIA despite not being seen with the group for nearly two years.

Her absence was all but confirmed when she did not appear with her groupmates when they celebrated their sixth birthday in September.

On January 9, her record company confirmed that they had terminated her contract and unsubscribed her on DIA’s official Instagram account.

DIA officially debuted in 2016, but the group struggled to find popularity on the idol music scene in South Korea.

Somyi was added to the group’s lineup in 2017 when she was just 17 and featured in one of their only hits, “Will You Go Out With Me?” ”, Which reached number 78 on the charts.

She previously appeared on the reality show The Unit where failed K-pop idols clashed to be part of a new group, but she narrowly missed the final roster.

Her last single with DIA was WooWa in 2019, which failed to make the top 100 in Korea.

She’s not the only K-pop idol to turn to the lucrative world of streaming to make ends meet, with Crayon Pop’s Ellin and former GLAM member Dahee also finding fame and fortune online.

According to recent reports, Somyi is already skyrocketing in the ranks of Panda TV models since news of his arrival on the site circulated in Korean media.
