In the United States, homes on a lake were covered with three feet of ice after two days of high winds.
Residents of Hamburg, New York, woke up to find their homes covered in ice over the weekend.
Photographs of the city show the properties, which are a few meters from Lake Erie, and nearby trees completely covered in ice – which the locals described as “scary”.
Ed Mis, who has lived in the city for eight years, told CNN that his neighbors were concerned about how the ice would affect the structure of their homes once it started to melt.
“It looks wrong, it looks unreal,” he said. “It’s dark inside my house. It can be a little strange, a little scary.”
Mis said the ice appeared on Friday morning.
“We are concerned about the integrity, the failure of the structure when it starts to melt, due to the weight on the roof,” he added.
“It’s a beautiful sight, but I don’t want to relive it.”
Temperatures dropped to -11 ° C (12 ° F) last Thursday.
The giant icicles were then created when strong winds blew water from the lake towards the houses, which then froze.
AccuWeather meteorologist Brett Rossio said: “A strong wave of west fetch and a tight pressure gradient encouraged strong winds and heavy snow to fall downwind of the lakes.
“The strong winds and high waves were responsible for the significant accumulation of ice on the houses of Hoover Beach.”
The Hamburg director of emergency services said the ice had to thaw before the teams could assess the full extent of the damage to the homes.
The plans for a breaching wall and other protective measures were reportedly filed by the city authorities.
