Jurgen Klopp urges Liverpool fans to cheer Trent Alexander-Arnold off the pitch as manager and defender hit back at criticism after superb free-kick against Rangers

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp gave Trent Alexander-Arnold a hero’s ovation in the 2-0 win over Rangers on Tuesday night.

The right-back, who has come under fire for his defense in recent weeks, netted a superb free-kick to put the Reds ahead.

Alexander-Arnold hasn’t played a single minute of the last international break and there are doubts whether the 23-year-old will be included in England’s squad for the upcoming World Cup.

After a timely reminder of his attacking qualities, Klopp ensured Alexander-Arnold got the morale boost he needed with a late substitution.

Klopp was seen gesturing towards the Kop End at Anfield to applaud the defender off the pitch after replacing him with Joe Gomez in the second half.

And after defending Alexander-Arnold last week, Klopp again hit back at his player’s criticism after the game.

“He played a good game, especially defensively, and a wonderful goal,” Klopp said.

“We had a defensive problem, our timing was not good, we take risks in our defense, everyone knows that and these gaps are often on Trent’s back but not because of him.

“He has to go up the track. We weren’t at the right time, so we had to adapt. It was a magnificent goal, what can I say? Not so long ago he scored but I’m glad he still has it in his locker.

And Alexander-Arnold had his own message for those who questioned him.

The defender said: “People say things but I go out and play for the team.

“It’s been a slow start to the season for me, but I can’t wait to see the rest.”
