German fans have told talkSPORT they want their national team to overhaul after their early World Cup exit in Qatar.
The 2014 World Cup winners exited Group E on Thursday night as their 4-2 win over Costa Rica was not enough to lift Japan and Spain to one of two qualifying places.
It’s the second World Cup since they were crowned world champions that they have exited the competition in the group stage – and the fans have seen enough.
The Germans started Qatar 2022 with a shock 2-1 defeat against Japan, followed by a 1-1 draw against Spain, their victory over Costa Rica not proving enough to qualify them for the knockout stages. final.
After being kicked out of the tournament, German manager Hansi Flick admitted his side had only themselves to blame for their early exit and their own future now looks uncertain – and fans believe that it’s time for him to move on.
“I think the manager needs to be changed,” a fan told talkSPORT in Qatar after the game, “He has the wrong head for the team.”
Many fans believe their national team failed to learn the lessons of Russia 2018, which also saw them sent off in the group stage, and their Euro 2020 round of 16 elimination.
It looks like they’ve already scouted the best people to bring them back to their glory days, with one fan keen for former Borussia Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp to come and lead his country.
In 2021, the Liverpool boss – who guided the Reds to a Premier League title and Champions League glory among other major trophies – dismissed links with him as a replacement for then recently sacked Joachim Low.
But German fans clearly haven’t forgotten about it.
“Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp, he’s not Liverpool anymore,” another fan told talkSPORT.
“He is coming to Germany. Coach us!
Despite the German’s humiliation in Qatar, there were some silver linings, with England fans particularly admiring former Three Lions youngster Jamal Musiala.
But a distraught German fan admitted he hadn’t rated the 19-year-old, saying the striker shouldn’t have been anywhere near the tournament’s starting XI.
He said: “They missed a lot of chances. I believe Musiala for example, I think he is not ready for a World Cup, he is not ready for the national team.
“Here, you saw it, against Japan, he missed a lot of chances, [Leroy] Sane was injured, I don’t know, they missed a lot of chances against Japan.
Another German fan summed up the tournament saying: “You already saw it in 2018 in Russia. We are not as good as we would like. Not today, not against Japan, that’s how it is.
