Ozark actress Julia Garner gives Anna Chlumsky a run for her money as manipulative fake heiress Anna Delvey in the new trailer for the Netflix limited series, Inventing Anna.
Garner, 27, helps unravel the truly bizarre, headline-grabbing story of Anna Delvey (or Anna Sorokin), a scam socialite who swindled millions by posing as a high-born German millionaire.
“This whole story is completely true. Except for all the parts that are totally made up,” quipped a title card in the new trailer.
Swindler: Ozark actress Julia Garner gives Anna Chlumsky a hard time as manipulative fake heiress Anna Delvey in new trailer for Netflix limited series Inventing Anna
“I might have a story,” begins Chlumsky, who plays journalist Vivian. Her name is Anna Delvey, or Anna Sorokin, no one is sure. Either she’s a rich German heiress or she’s penniless.
The nine-part saga of Inventing Anna is based on the true story of Anna Sorokin, aka Delvey.
Shonda Rhimes’ new series will unravel the twisted story of Delvey’s many frauds, scams and deceptions perpetrated between 2013 and 2017, which ultimately landed her 20-somethings behind bars.
“Anna committed real white-collar crimes by posing as a socialite in an effort to steal millions of dollars,” a prosecutor said in court during Anna’s trial, which will be covered in the series.

Delvey/Sorokin’s chicanery is told through his prison interviews with Vivian, which begin on awkward footing.
After the reporter says of her that she just wanted to ask her “a few questions,” an aloof Delvey quips in accented English: “I have a question. What are you wearing? You look poor.
“I heard I’m famous,” Garner says. “People are painting a public image of me as a criminal. It’s not my story.

The fraudster is described in the trailer as “everything wrong with America right now” and someone who came to the United States without “rich parents, no connections”.
She managed to “fake it until you make it” and ended up gouging $40 million from the banks in a massive loan to fund the creation of an ultra-VIP private club. At another point in the trailer, it is stated that “Anna stole a jet!”.
‘You have to work hard to get what you want. I always knew that,” Anna says from prison.
Its outlandish drawbacks had many real-world consequences for people who were unfortunate enough to be swept into its orbit.

“I realized the clues were there all along,” Laverne Cox says sadly.
As actress Katie Lowes mourns over the thousands of charges her supposedly well-heeled friend has racked up on her credit cards.
“Give me that money back, please,” she begs, only to meet Anna’s impassive stare, “Why are you like this?” So dramatic.’
The trailer ends with a frantic Garner exclaiming, “Anna Delvey is a masterpiece b***hes…”

Deception: Sorokin, who was convicted in 2019, was accused of taking fake loans and asking friends to cover her expenses before failing to repay them; seen in court in 2019
Sorokin, a working-class Russian immigrant who moved to Germany with her family as a teenager, first started using the invented surname Delvey after moving to Paris to work at a fashion magazine.
She kept the name when she moved to the United States and reinvented herself as a German heiress, who embraced a life of luxury supported by fraudulent loan applications.
One of Sorokin’s traveling companions, Rachel DeLoache Williams, revealed to Vanity Fair in 2018 how her fake friend convinced her to put a $62,000 bill on her credit card, plus other expenses.
She told Williams she would transfer the money to him once she got home, but that never materialized.

Sorokin was indicted in 2017 and convicted in 2019 of eight counts, including second degree grand larceny, attempted grand larceny and theft of services, although the jury returned a verdict of not guilty on the theft charge for failing to repay Williams.
The convicted fraudster was released from prison in February 2021, only to be taken into custody by Immigrant and Customs Enforcement (ICE) for overstaying her visa.
With Garner and Chlumsky, Inventing Anna stars Laverne Cox, Katie Lowes, Alexis Floyd and Anders Holm.
Inventing Anna is released on February 11, 2022.
