“It’s just discipline and attention to detail,” Walker said. “If you have those two intangibles there, you can go so far in MMA. The Marine Corps likes to take pride in saying that we can reach any corner of the world and mobilize in 24 to 48 hours, so it’s all about being always ready, always being detail oriented and be disciplined. If you make a mistake, your buddy dies. You make a mistake, you die. If you stick with that mindset and bring it to the fighting game and I have my hands down, I’m knocked out. Wrong move, I’m hurt. The mental toughness and the discipline to stick to a game plan, I think that’s it.
Something else Walker was able to take away was a sniper honor that split the family. Has he officially surpassed his grandfather’s shooting accolades?
“I think I’m a little better,” laughed Walker.
At just 24 years old and with a 6-1 record, Walker has put himself in an incredible position to thrive in MMA. It’s always easy as a youngster to “dedicate your life” to a sport when it all means having fun in training. From day one, he’s made it his goal to be exactly what he’s on his way to becoming: a UFC star. With the help of his grandfather, Jon Jones, wrestling and more, he knocks on the door of the UFC with time on his side and the wind at his back.
