Jose Mourinho’s penalty record as manager in England is terrible.
His last punctual misfortunes came when Tottenham failed to reserve his place in the FA Cup quarter-final thanks to Norwich on Wednesday.
Jan Vertonghen’s first goal seemed sufficient to organize a quarter-final against Manchester United or Derby, until Michel Vorm’s error on a Kenny McClean shot, which Josip Drmic slipped, offered the Canaries an equalizer late.
And a tie was struck after a scoreless overtime period, with Erik Lamela’s free kick hitting the bar and Norwich goalkeeper Tim Krul saving the 12-yard effort of Troy Parrott and Gedson Fernandes.
It was revealed after the match that Krul had noted the Spurs’ shooters on his BOTTLE OF WATER so that he could verify how they would draw their attempts.
And it’s fair to say that his reminder worked when Norwich won a memorable victory.
The defeat means that Mourinho has lost the SEVEN shootouts in which he has participated as manager of an English club since joining Chelsea in 2004.
Mourinho’s terrible penalty shootout record in English football
- Chelsea 4-5 Charlton (League Cup, October 2005)
- Liverpool 4-1 Chelsea (Champions League, May 2007)
- Chelsea 0-3 Manchester United (Community Shield, Aug 2007)
- Chelsea 4-5 Bayern Munich (UEFA Super Cup, August 2013)
- Stoke 5-4 Chelsea (League Cup, October 2015)
- Man United 7-8 Derby (League Cup, September 2018)
- Tottenham 2-3 Norwich (FA Cup, March 2020)
Mourinho’s first shootout loss occurred at Stamford Bridge at the hands of Charlton, who eliminated his Chelsea team from the League Cup in October 2005.
Although it was not a regular 90-minute match, it was the first time the Portuguese coach had lost at home with the Blues.
Other major shootout losses include the Champions League sorrow over Liverpool who denied the Blues a spot in the 2007 final, and an 8-7 loss as Manchester United boss against the championship club Derby in September 2018.
The latter result added pressure to Mourinho, who was sacked by the heads of the United States three months later.
In fact, the only penalty shootout Mourinho has ever won as a crèche came during his tenure as head of the Internazionale.
The Italian giants beat Roma 6-5 on penalties to win the Supercoppa Italiana in August 2008.
But speaking after his last penalty shootout defeat, this time in Norwich, the Tottenham boss felt that his team had no luck in the loss.
He said, “We don’t deserve to lose. We fought so hard. In the late 90’s and in overtime, we were the ones trying to win the game.
“I cannot have any negative feelings towards my players. I’m really, really sad for the boys. “
