Jose Mourinho’s decision to invent his own award to present to Scott McTominay was so last minute that the ‘trophy’ presented to the Manchester United midfielder is actually a candle holder.
David de Gea received the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award in 2018, but the end of the night saw McTominay receive his own special award.
It was a nice touch from Mourinho, who has been widely praised for bestowing extra recognition on the 21-year-old.
However, what may not be known is how improvised Mourinho’s decision was.
talkSPORT’s Andy Goldstein, who worked for MUTV on the night of the awards show, reveals it only became clear the Portuguese would feature him in the middle of the evening.
Goldstein said on Drive: “When I was doing the Man United Player of the Year awards for MUTV, and he was a manager, we were doing the show live in a studio next to the awards.
“You have the standard awards like the Matt Busby Player of the Year award, but we got wind of it the night Jose wanted to create his own award and give an award.
“I don’t mean the afternoon of the awards ceremony, I mean during the evening. The evening started at 8:00 p.m. and around 9:30 p.m. we got wind that Jose wanted to present an award. It may have been earlier, but it was the middle of the night.
“It was the Jose Mourinho player of the season award, which Scott McTominay won.
“But with a prize, you need a trophy. So they ended up giving Scott McTominay a candle holder. It was long, silvery and slightly curved – that’s all they could find.
“I don’t know if Scott McTominay knows he won a candlestick.”
Mourinho lost his job at the helm of Old Trafford in December 2018. Many may think it’s a bad reflection on Man United that one of the great managers was fired, but Goldstein believes it was the right decision .
Goldstein said: “He doesn’t bring happiness to any club, no player wants to play for him. I wouldn’t want him near my club.
“Spurs and Chelsea fans have seen him, he brings a dark cloud to the club. I’m not just talking about the players – I’m talking about the tea lady, the TV station production people, everything the world. I speak from first-hand experience.
“I couldn’t take it anymore, it was horrible. He was horrible to me, it was just that Jose was Jose.
Goldstein added: “I was never a fan of the way he carried himself…you have to call him a legend of the game and respect what he did.”
