Jorginho gets revenge on Jordan Pickford as Chelsea see off Frank Lampard’s Everton at Goodison Park

Jorginho finally got his revenge on Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford with a decisive penalty as Chelsea sealed a winning start to the Premier League season.

But it was not a convincing victory for Thomas Tuchel’s men, as they beat Blues legend Frank Lampard’s Toffees 1-0 on Merseyside.

After a heartbreaking atmosphere at Goodison Park at the start, the atmosphere was somewhat muted as Ben Godfrey was stretched from the pitch with a serious leg injury.

It came after defensive confusion between the defender and Pickford, leading to a challenge on Kai Havertz which saw Godfrey’s leg twist out from under him.

With Mason Holgate the substitute, it was Chelsea who advanced with Blues debutant Raheem Sterling calling for a penalty after being fired into the area but the referee dismissed the claims.

At the other end, Edouard Mendy was forced into an excellent save to prevent James Tarkowski who propelled a header towards the goal.

It looked like the half-time break was approaching aimlessly until N’Golo Kante’s shot was parried in the way of Sterling heading home, only to see the linesman signal an offside , much to his dismay.

However, Chelsea were awarded a penalty just before the break as Ben Chilwell was knocked down by Abdoulaye Doucoure, with Jorginho converting easily.

It is the first time he has passed Pickford since the Italian midfielder was denied by England’s number one in the Euro 2020 final, a game decided by a penalty shootout.

Everton moved forward in the second half with Mendy making a superb double save to prevent Doucoure and Holgate from close range.

Substitute Dele Alli had a chance to grab an equalizer but swelled his lines, before Marc Cucurella was brought on to make his Chelsea debut, replacing Kalidou Koulibaly who appeared to take a hit.

Cucurella almost had an immediate impact as he clipped the ball to Sterling who sent his effort from just wide of the mark ten minutes from time.

The final stages were delayed due to a medical emergency in the stands, but luckily the stoppage was brief and play resumed.

Ten minutes were added as stoppage time as a result but, in truth, Everton rarely seemed to want to get back into the game and Thomas Tuchel will be delighted with a positive start to the new season.
