Everton will fail to fulfill their six best dreams with Jordan Pickford in the goal, according to Perry Groves.
The former Arsenal star hammered the goalkeeper after being guilty of two big clangers in the Toffees’ Carabao Cup clash against Fleetwood Town.
Everton won the third round game 5-2, but Pickford’s mistakes made the night difficult as his future as England’s No.1 was again in question.
Groves said Pickford’s two mistakes were saves an Under-12 goalkeeper might have expected to make.
And the talkSPORT expert believes keeping him in goal could cost Carlo Ancelotti a long-awaited return to the Premier League top six this season.
Speaking to Sport Bar on Wednesday, the former Arsenal winger said: “I’ve been pretty critical of Jordan Pickford over the last year at 18 months, and people have said he’s a youngster. goalkeeper, he plays from the back, his serve is good. and he stings bullets everywhere …
“But I’m old school – stop the ball in your net first!” Everything else is a bonus.
“If you look at the two mistakes tonight, it’s his focus
“The second… honestly, a goalie under 12 would be disappointed if he let that in!” It came straight to him and it basically went through his hands.
“I think he’s thinking, ‘What do I do with the ball once I have it.’ I think he’s thinking about the future, because if you master your technique, it doesn’t go over you, but he patted her and she went through him.
“Everton have signed some very good players; Allan looks great in the midfield, we all know James Rodriguez and Abdoulaye Doucoure is a good player as well. Everton should be looking to get into the top six, and with the money they’ve spent it’s doable.
“But not with Jordan Pickford in the goal. I think it will cost them to get in the top six.
There is also a huge debate over whether Pickford should still be England’s No.1 after his latest mistakes.
Gareth Southgate has insisted in the past that Everton’s man will continue to be his first choice goalie until he makes mistakes for the Three Lions – which he has yet to fact.
But with Burnley’s Nick Pope and Manchester United’s Dean Henderson impressing and proving more reliable shooting saves in recent seasons, many are arguing that it’s time for Pickford to be replaced.
But Jamie O’Hara is not among those critics, as the Specialist has backed the Toffees star and said he is able to make, and often does, world-class backups that people ignore.
And he hit back at those who “jump on the bandwagon” and hammer the keeper for every mistake he makes.
“I support Jordan Pickford,” the former Tottenham midfielder said on talkSPORT Breakfast.
“Yes he tends to make mistakes, he’s still a young goalie, but he can make world class saves and he’s fantastic with his feet.
“Okay, he gave up a bit last night, but they won 5-2, so let’s not get too carried away.
“I watched him against Tottenham when Everton won 1-0, the first game of the season, they made two world class saves and no one talked about it!
“I wanted to say, ‘Wait, we’re all really quick to jump on the bandwagon on Pickford making mistakes and saying he’s not good enough and shouldn’t be # 1 in England, but no one talks about the brilliant saves made too!
