Jordan Pickford thinks the level of penalties at the World Cup has been poor and is confident of being decisive in a shootout.

Pickford is expected to keep his place in Gareth Southgate’s line-up for Saturday’s quarter-final tie against France and will be hoping to continue his shutout streak.

The Everton no1 hasn’t conceded since Iran scored two second-half goals in England’s first group game.

The last player to find a way past Pickford was Mehdi Teremi who netted a late penalty for Iran.

Teremi’s well-taken kick was one of the best in a World Cup that has seen poorly done efforts.

It’s fair to say that Pickford wasn’t overly impressed with the level of penalties presented to Qatar and he gave his opinion on England’s ability to rise to the challenge should they be faced with the challenge.

“It’s a pressure situation, you know, and penalties – you see Morocco against Spain [shoot-out] it felt like the keeper made three great saves in the shootout,” Pickford told talkSPORT.

“It’s a skill under pressure that you have to execute and it’s something we’re sure to do if it comes to the penalty shoot-out stage.

Pickford is confident he can be England’s savior if faced with the prospect of a penalty shootout and the 28-year-old gave insight into his approach in the moments before facing one.

Asked if the key to outsmarting the penalty taker is based on instinct or analysis, Pickford explained: “I think it’s a bit of both, sometimes you kind of feel like that I want him to go this way so I’m going to go this way.

“It’s about picking a side and really executing your dive. You just have to give full throttle to your dive and really cover the lens. it’s something I’ve practiced and I feel like I’m going to be successful if it happens.
