As well as being in the right position to organize the submission, Piersma received a rare blessing from his trainer to attempt the rare move. In just his second professional fight, his coach’s confidence mirrored his own. While creating a rush was the most likely scenario, Piersma decided to set social media on fire instead.
“You don’t see this too often in MMA,” Piersma said. “I think it only happened twice in the UFC and the CFFC told me it was only the second scapula in CFFC history so it was surprising because no one sees them a lot. I was confident in my BJJ skills.
Joining Adam Wieczorek and Ben Saunders in the exclusive club, Piersma explains that his confidence in his scrambling game is high enough that he rejects the scapula if the situation arises.
Satisfied with his job, Piersma remains focused on his career instead of getting ahead of himself. As for the rest of the year, however, Piersma calls him as he sees it. It will be difficult to reverse his submission. Even grappling shows will have little to offer to surpass his performance in his sophomore endeavor.
“The banana separates, you don’t see that very often, it’s quite rare,” Piersma said. “If someone hit that, it would give me a bit of competition. Twister is always cool to see. There is a lot of weather in the year so you never know, but I hope I hang on to this place.
