John Oliver Goes Into HBO’s ‘Dragon House’ For Dark Scenes: ‘It’s Really Hard To Watch’ – Deadline

John Oliver was back for another episode of Last week tonight and this time he’s digging at HBO Dragon House. The comedian took a swipe at the dark scenes of the game of thrones spin-off that proved controversial among viewers.

While the topic was transgender rights and a little girl expressing her frustration with the bathroom situation at school, Oliver tried to lighten up the dark moment by poking fun at the HBO fantasy series.

“It’s brutal! It’s so dark it’s really hard to watch,” Oliver said of the young transgender girl talking about having security guards when she goes to the bathroom.

Oliver then joked, “Which would also, coincidentally, be a fairly accurate catchphrase for Dragon House.”

Onscreen, the tagline read, “It’s so dark it’s really hard to watch.”

This was after episode 7 of Dragon House aired that viewers expressed frustration with how dark some scenes were. The episodes appeared to have been shot in daylight, but toned down in post-production to make it look like it was evening.

Some fans weren’t happy they had to adjust their TV settings and took to social media to vent. The HBO Max customer service Twitter account responded to some viewers saying the poorly lit scenes were on purpose.

“We appreciate you contacting us regarding a nighttime scene in House of the Dragon: Episode 7 appearing dark on your screen. The dim lighting of this scene was an intentional creative decision. Thank you!” HBOMaxHelp account tweeted.

Last week tonight with John Oliver airs Sunday nights at 11 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
