Taylor Swift recently released an updated recording of her album Red which sent the internet into an absolute frenzy, especially after the brand new music video for the breakup ballad “All Too Well”.
Red (Taylor version) included a 10 minute version of “All Too Well,” a song said to be about Jake Gyllenhaal, which once again led to speculation about their 2010 romance. This of course led to many memes.

Now that the dust has settled somewhat on Taylor and Jake again, the Swifties have also turned their attention to none other than John Mayer who Taylor dated in 2009 and who would have written “Dear John”.
The TL; DR If you are new to the John and Taylor saga, it is because the two musicians dated in 2009, when Taylor was 19 and John 32. Although they were only together for a short time, the relationship left enough impact for a song to write, with the lyrics to “Dear John” pointedly calling out Mayer for his behavior.
“Dear John, I see it all, now it was wrong / Don’t you think 19 is too young / to be played by your dark and twisted games, when I loved you so much?” Taylor sings in the track.
Mayer has approached the song in recent years, saying he was caught off guard by the track and called it “cheap” songwriting.
something that is not discussed enough is that the jokes “Watch out, she will write a song about you” and the story “Taylor Swift is crazy and obsessed with boys” were mainly fueled by John Mayer after she (19) wrote a song detailing her (32) emotional abuse

Then, after the re-release of the “All Too Well” music video, the Swifties anticipate what could possibly happen to John Mayer.
ok but if it’s that bad for Jake Gyllenhaal…. imagine what’s coming for john mayer pic.twitter.com/7HN08emWz2

Most of the memes and jokes about John Mayer were relatively harmless, however, it turns out that people have crept into his DMs with abusive messages as well.
Screenshots have now been shared on Twitter and Tiktok showing John Mayer actually responding to fans, asking one in particular “Do you really hope I die?” “

According to this article by BuzzFeed, the first message to Mayer said, “Fuck you, you bitch, I hope you’re choking on something.”
do you remember when he said: “kindness takes a lot of intelligence”?
he could have answered him harshly, and that would have been completely understandable (ok he’s a celebrity he’s used to that but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s not right and it can affect people). instead he- pic.twitter.com/kuwQqy4aFL

After John responded, the fan backed out and apologized saying it was a challenge and that she didn’t expect him to see the post.
Maybe we should all just have a cup of tea and calm down and sob while listening to how good the 10 minute version of “All Too Well” is? Just an idea.
