John Mayer took his digital footprint to the next level on Monday when he launched his first TikTok account. But the answer may not have been what the 43-year-old singer-songwriter had expected.
Instagram talk show internet savvy host Current mood noticed early on that the reactions to exploring its app were not entirely positive. Underneath his first clip, which showed him jokingly trying to figure out how the app works, Mayer’s comment section was filled with jabs from upset fans – many apparently Taylor Swift fans.
Some wrote comments like “we will never forget what you did to our daughter Taylor” and quoted the lyrics to Swift’s 2010 track “Dear John”, which many believe to be about the singers’ past relationship. One fan commented, “John, don’t you think 19 was too young,” referring to Swift’s age when Mayer dated her at 32.
The guitarist then apparently responded with a TikTok, where he pretended to nod his head in conversation with the caption “POV: You berate me and I listen to you.”
Mayer then signed on with a third TikTok, singing the lyrics “It was a weird day / That was a really weird day” and captioning the message “Goodnight new friends!” The Continuum the singer has not yet shared any video today.
In 2012, Mayer spoke with Rolling stone, calling Swift’s writing “something really bad to do.” Swift responded a few months later, saying Mayer was “cocky” to think the song was about him.
