Joe Marler still hasn’t made it to pre-season training with the Harlequins, but he has jokingly promised he’s “NOT doing a Harry Kane.”
The England captain continues to dominate airwaves, columns and television time due to his continued absence from Tottenham Hotspur’s training ground.
Kane is reportedly keen on a move to Manchester City but remains stuck in a long-term deal with Spurs which means Daniel Levy has a strong hand.
Like Kane, funny man Marler is also set to resume preseason training for the Premiership Champions Quins, with head coach Habai Watson unaware of where the loose accessory is.
However, the England striker insists he is getting much-needed paternity leave after welcoming his fourth child in June.
“I don’t know a single player in any sport who would worry about missing the preseason,” Marler said on Breakfast.
“It’s not a protest, it’s just that I forgot the dates,” he joked. “No, it’s not fair, I actually took deferred paternity leave.
“So my wife had a child in… when was that?” Six, seven weeks ago and it was around the Premiership semi-final.
“And I said to the boss, ‘I’m going to have to take the paternity, mate. I looked in the contract, I’ve never had paternity before and apparently you can get away with it.
“He said, ‘It’s okay, when are you going to take it?’ And I said, ‘Well, as soon as the baby comes – that’s kind of why.’
“And he said, ‘But this is the semi-final and the potential final?’ I said. ‘Yeah sorry buddy, that’s how the cookie crumbles.’
“So I said I would take it late, so that’s just one of the delayed points.”
When Jamie O’Hara asked if his manager knew why he was missing from practice, Marler couldn’t contain his laughter.
He added: “He doesn’t know yet! If he’s listening, it’s the first time he’s heard it. Brilliant. “
