‘I can’t talk about it without crying’: Jodie Whittaker admits she’s emotional thinking about leaving Doctor Who… ahead of her ‘massive’ grand series finale
Jodie Whittaker has revealed that she “burst into tears” when discussing her departure from Doctor Who.
The actress, 40, played the eponymous Time Lord on screen for four years and is set to retire from the sci-fi series in its final episode in October.
But despite her emotion about the end of the chapter, she also detailed her excitement for the big final episode to air – calling it a “real treat” for fans.

Speaking to Empire Magazine about her impending departure, Jodie admitted: ‘I can’t talk about it without crying. When I could see that the team was happy with that last shot, that’s when my bottom lip started to move.
“I was like ‘Well, they can’t say they need another take now because I lost it! “, She joked.
But despite how emotional the scenes were, Jodie, who became the first female doctor in the show’s history in 2017, was happy with how her final episode ended.

Jodie previously said she was stepping down from the coveted role this year because she felt it needed “new energy”.
And she will hand over the mantle of Time Lord to Sex Education actor Ncuti Gatwa, and explained that she was “delighted” with the “beautiful dialogue” in her final scenes.
In the finale, the star would pay homage to former Time Lords by wearing their iconic outfits throughout the feature-length episode – which will be titled The Power of the Doctor.

With plenty of surprises in store, Jodie dubbed the episode “a real treat” for fans – as it will lead into the next phase of Doctor Who, with Russell T Davies returning as showrunner and Ncuti beginning his run.
Earlier this year, showrunner Davies teased, “It’s a 90-minute epic, it’s fantastic.” So, it’s gorgeous with lots of surprises,” during an appearance on The One Show.
In a previous chat with Empire Magazine, Jodie explained, “There’s all the iconic things that you associate with Doctor Who, it’s huge.”
Ncuti is set to be the first black doctor in the show’s history, once again marking a milestone for the long-running BBC series.
