Joao Cancelo’s £62million price tag may be too expensive for Bayern Munich but the club chief hopes a ‘joint solution’ can be found with Man City for the ‘dream player’

Bayern Munich’s sporting director has admitted the club might not be able to afford Joao Cancelo on a permanent transfer this summer.

The ousted Manchester City full-back has signed with the Bundesliga side on loan until the end of the season after being sent off on deadline day.

The deal also includes an option to buy at the end of the loan for a fee of £62.8million. However, although Bayern want that to happen, they admitted it might not be feasible.

Speaking about the January signing, Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic said: “But we also made it clear to him that this sum is hard to imagine for us in the next few years.”

However, the Bundesliga club are hopeful they can strike a deal with Man City, particularly if there is no more room for the Portuguese star in Pep Guardiola’s plans for next season.

“But I also learned that if all parties absolutely want a common solution, you can also achieve it in the end,” Salihamidzic continued.

“He knows he’s been one of our dream players for years.”

If Cancelo’s start to life with Bayern has anything to do with it, chances are they’ll be even more keen to keep him until the end of the campaign.

Just a day after signing, Cancelo made his full debut for the Bundesliga leaders as they faced Mainz in the DFB-Pokal Round of 16.

It took just 17 minutes for the 28-year-old to make his mark, assisting Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting’s opener with a delightful cross at the far post.

He then recorded another on his league debut on Sunday, assisting Kingsley Coman in their game against Wolfsburg.

Cancelo had fallen down the pecking order at the Etihad and was an unused substitute in their previous three games before his move.

Academy star Rico Lewis is now one of Guardiola’s first choices in the full-back squad, the 18-year-old impressive for the team.

However, Cancelo has since revealed his move had nothing to do with a reported falling out with Guardiola.

“I haven’t had a lot of game time over the past few weeks, which influenced my decision,” he said during his reveal. “It has nothing to do with my relationship with Pep.

“I decided to leave for a new adventure. I’m happy here, it’s a big club, with a lot of history.
