Jennifer Lawrence’s new movie role seems scary after her 2021 comedy with Leonardo DiCaprio

Summary

  • DiCaprio and Lawrence’s on-screen dynamic shifts from teacher-student to lovers, creating potential discomfort for the audience.
  • The age gap between DiCaprio and Lawrence is significantly larger than that of Sinatra and Gardner, raising questions about their dynamic.
  • The casting of DiCaprio and Lawrence could unintentionally overshadow Scorsese’s long-running passion project with real-life implications.

Jennifer Lawrence’s role in Martin Scorsese’s upcoming biopic Sinatra feels a lot more awkward because of her role in a hit 2021 comedy alongside co-star Leonardo DiCaprio. As two of the most acclaimed and decorated actors of the last few decades, the prospect of seeing DiCaprio and Lawrence together on screen is a tantalizing prospect. However, due to the couple’s dynamic in a previous film, their roles in Scorsese’s anticipated film might be somewhat compromised.

Although Scorsese’s Sinatra The project is still in its early stages, so what we know about the film is extremely exciting. Not only is the film set to follow Leonardo DiCaprio as the legendary crooner, but it will also explore some more controversial aspects of the singer’s life. In fact, part of the reason behind the film’s long development period in hell (reportedly lasting over 20 years since Scorsese began planning) is the director’s determination to portray Sinatra’s dark side. However, while that might make the film more interesting, it might also take a backseat due to star DiCaprio’s distracting history with Jennifer Lawrence.

Jennifer Lawrence and Leonardo DiCaprio went from being teachers and students to being lovers

According to several reports, Jennifer Lawrence is set to play Sinatra’s second wife, performer Ava Gardner. Assuming the film takes a traditional biopic approach, this means the pair will be engaged in a romantic relationship on screen – mirroring the real-life dynamic between Gardner and Sinatra. However, this is not particularly problematic in itself, the situation may seem slightly awkward to the public given that the pair’s only previous collaboration saw them play a teacher and a student in the Adam McKay comedy Don’t look for. Naturally, the switch between the two dynamics can be uncomfortably jarring.

Martin Scorsese’s next film, a biopic about iconic singer Frank Sinatra, is the latest in a series of four films between the director and an actor.

Even if such a sudden change between the two actors’ on-screen relationships is not difficult to negotiate for some performers, the respective profiles of Lawrence and DiCaprio and the short time that has passed since Don’t look for (which was released in 2021) means comparisons are inevitable. Since the platonic and professional nature of their relationship played a significant role in the satire, some viewers might find it difficult to make yourself understood when seeing DiCaprio and Lawrence presented in a completely different way. If Sinatra promises to be a very different kind of film, Don’t look for‘s legacy is impossible to ignore.

Another factor that makes the Lawrence and DiCaprio combination even more questionable is the age difference between the two actors and Frank Sinatra and Ava Gardner. In real life, Sinatra and Gardner were only seven years apartwith Sinatra born December 1915 and Gardner born December 1922. However, DiCaprio and Lawrence are almost 16 years apart (born in December 1974 and August 1990 respectively). This only accentuates the age gap, which will already be under scrutiny after the duo’s performance in Don’t look for.

Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Scorsese has inflated a real age divide in a DiCaprio project. During the casting the wolf of Wall Street, the director paired DiCaprio with Margot Robbie as former husband and wife Jordan Belfort and Nadine Caridi. As for DiCaprio and Lawrence, the age difference between the two actors is almost 16 years, while Belfort and Caridi are only five years apart. The success of Robbie and DiCaprio’s on-screen collaboration shows that this doesn’t necessarily pose a barrier. However, the duo didn’t have the added complication of a previous project that distracted from their dynamic.

DiCaprio and Lawrence’s sustained success as actors means the pair have every chance of making Sinatra and Gardner’s relationship believable on the big screen – regardless of how impactful Sinatra and Gardner’s relationship is. Don’t look for on the public. However, an unfortunate side effect of this decision could be that viewers have a hard time taking the film as seriously as its producers want, due to a long-running joke about Leonardo DiCaprio’s personal life. The star has faced scrutiny due to his alleged preference for dating women much younger than himthe public perception – rightly or wrongly – being that his relationships usually involve women under the age of 25.

This reputation, coupled with an artificially raised age limit for Sinatra, risks transforming the film into an unintentional parody of real life. Of course, it’s not reasonable to suggest that a film makes casting decisions based on the dating history of potential actors. However, when combined with his and Lawrence’s Don’t look for legacy, it’s possible that the actors’ ages will overshadow what has been a longtime passion project for one of the greatest directors of all time.
