The Serpent is an eight-part series based on the Real-life story of Charles, a murderer, thief, and alluring master of disguise, who was a hidden obscurity in the mid-70s on the hippie track of Asia.

Jenna recently spoke about the show’s fashion with Vogue magazine.

She said: ‘ We had a lot of reference images and talked about wanting a black [Brigitte] Bardot atmosphere. In my mind, Marie-Andrée was obsessed with magazines, especially Paris.

“The idea was that she wanted to get rid of her French-Canadian identity and turn into someone else. There is buoyancy in her look and I brought the idea that she wears kimonos throughout the house.

The sunglasses are amazing too, and then there’s what she wears in Paris.

‘We looked at pictures of Mick and looked at pictures of Mick and Bianca Jagger, and that’s where we got the idea [Sobhraj and Leclerc’s] suit. I also had a partial wig because when we first met Marie-Andrée she has big curly hair.

French Canadian Leclerc started his relationship with Sobhraj at the age of 30 after poisoning his friend to ‘put him aside’, but Leclerc was ‘delighted’ to meet the charismatic Sobhraj.

Leclerc quickly understood how immoral and corrupt his new partner was, but she always stood by his side and even turned the music on as he and an accomplice clubbed two victims to near death.

Notorious crook Sobhrag lured tourists and tricked them into giving them their money for his scams, and if they refused to help him, he poisoned them.

One of her first known victims was American tourist Teresa Knowlton, who was murdered at age 21 after being drowned in a bikini by Sobhraj and her henchman Ajay Chowdhury.

However, rather than run away from the situation, Leclerc claimed to be the murdered victim so that she could cash the thousands of pounds in travelers’ checks they had stolen from her.

Sobhraj was first arrested in 1976 when he attempted to drug an entire group of French students in New Delhi and one of them understood his plan and handed it over to the authorities.

He spent a total of 21 years in prison in India where he was jailed for culpable homicide for poisoning a French tourist and killing an Israeli. He was released in 1997.

While in prison, Thai authorities attempted to extradite Sobhraj and he threw a big party for inmates and guards. He drugged them all with sleeping pills and managed to get out of the prison.

He was then arrested and jailed for another 10 years for the event until 1997.

The law caught up with him again in Nepal in 2004 when he was jailed for the murder of American tourist Connie Joe Bronzich in 1975.

In 2014, he was sentenced to a second life sentence for the murder of Canadian backpacker Laurent Carrière, whose passport he had used to flee Nepal after killing the couple.

Sobhraj has now been linked with 20 murders during his murder spree.

In prison in Kathmandu, Sobhraj married Biswas, who is 44 years younger and the daughter of his lawyer.

Leclerc professed his innocence until his death at 38, following a diagnosis of ovarian cancer while imprisoned in India.

She was allowed to return to Canada on the condition that she return to India when her health improved.
