Free agent Jadeveon Clowney has signed a one-year contract with the Cleveland Browns, it was announced Wednesday.
The deal is worth up to $ 10 million, a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
Clowney will have the opportunity to thrive playing against fellow former No. 1 overall Myles Garrett.
“We are delighted to add Jadeveon to our defensive line,” Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said in a statement. It’s a disruptive force that will help us against the run and the pass. We’ve been able to make some nice additions to our defense throughout free agency and can’t wait to get down to business, so we can improve our squad. “
Clowney, 28, visited the Browns last month, sources told ESPN, but left Cleveland without a deal. GM Andrew Berry also sued him heavily last season to team up with Garrett, but the three-time Pro Bowler reportedly rejected Cleveland’s multi-year contract offer and ultimately signed a one-year, $ 13million contract. dollars with the Tennessee Titans.
Clowney struggled in 2020 with Tennessee, finishing with 19 tackles and zero sacks in eight games before sustaining a knee injury that ended the season in November. He was operated on in December and is expected to be in full health for the start of the 2021 season.
Over the past three seasons, Clowney has placed fifth in the NFL with a 25% success rate, according to ESPN Stats & Info. During that time, Garrett ranks third, at 26%.
“We love his relentless playstyle,” Berry said in a statement. “He’s one of the most disruptive players in the game and we think he’s going to add an element of toughness along our defensive line and will team up well with a lot of the players we already have on the roster. something else we love about Jadeveon is his versatility, his ability to play across the board and impact the game regardless of his lineup. “
Cleveland already stepped up their free agency pass rush last month, signing Takk McKinley to a one-year contract. McKinley suffered injuries last season, but placed seventh in assists winning rate in 2018, one spot behind Clowney and four behind Garrett this season.
No.1 in the 2014 Houston Texans overall, Clowney can play any position along the defensive front, making him invaluable for teams that want versatility. He is a disruptive player as an inside passer or going out of the rim.
Clowney has 255 tackles (75 for a loss), 86 quarterback hits and 32 sacks in seven seasons. During his career, he suffered various knee injuries, in addition to injuries to the groin, elbow, back and Lisfranc.
The Browns now have three of the last seven No. 1 draft picks on their roster, including quarterback Baker Mayfield.
