JACKSON – The Jackson-area women’s basketball season is proving to be even more competitive than many anticipated as the 2021 campaign approaches, with many league title races starting to take shape after two weeks of action.
As we move into week three of the season, here’s a look at the local rankings of all the Jackson-area girls’ basketball teams.
10. Jackson (2-2)
The Vikings faced a tough opening schedule in 2021, but were competitive in every contest. They opened the week with a win over Pinckney on Monday and will host Dexter (4-1) on Thursday in a decisive game against the SEC Whites.
9. Leslie (1-0)
The Blackhawks have recorded just one win so far this season, with their game against Vermontville Maple Valley and Lake Odessa Lakewood both postponed last week. They will travel to Lansing Christian (3-1), Olivet (4-1) and Stockbridge (4-1) this week in a series of crucial Greater Lansing Athletic Conference clashes.
8. Springport (4-2)
The Spartans abandoned a 65-29 decision over Division 2 opponent Eaton Rapids over the weekend, but remain unbeaten in the Big Eight Conference game. They started the week with a win over Quincy and will host Concord (1-5) on Thursday night before facing Homer (3-1) and Jonesville (3-2) next week in critical league clashes.
7. Jonesville (4-2)
The Comets did not hesitate to participate in the competition during the first part of the season. Their only losses so far have come to the undefeated Onsted and Division 3 powerhouse Ypsilanti Arbor Prep. They opened the week with an impressive victory over Homer and will travel to Reading (2-2) on Thursday.
6. Jackson Northwest (5-1)
The Mounties have notched four straight wins of 20 or more points since losing to Parma Western two weeks ago and are quickly recovering as the top contender in the Interstate Eight Conference race. They will face Hastings (1-5) and Marshall (4-1) this week with an imminent rematch with Western (5-0) next week.
5. Central Michigan (5-0)
The Cardinals have run their opener so far this winter, winning every game by at least 36 points. Another important win over Napoleon on Monday and a winnable game against Addison on Wednesday should set up a Cascades Conference showdown with Grass Lake next week.
4. Stockbridge (5-1)
The Panthers have recorded four straight wins since their season opener loss to Chelsea and added another win over Lake Odessa Lakewood on Monday. They will host Lansing Christian (3-1) and Leslie (1-0) this week as they continue to set the tone for the rest of GLAC in 2021.
3. Columbia Central (4-1)
Aside from a narrow loss to Adrian Lenawee Christian (55-45), the Golden Eagles have been dominant so far this season with three straight wins by double-digit points. Columbia Central is expected to be preferred over Ida (1-2) and Blissfield (2-4) before a showdown with undefeated Onsted (6-0) on Saturday.
2. Parma West (5-0)
The Panthers went through their first five games of the season quickly, winning each game by at least 20 points. They will host Marshall (4-1) in a critical Interstate Eight Conference game tonight before a road trip to Lumen Christi (2-2) on Thursday and a home game with East Lansing (2-0), ranked by l ‘State, Saturday.
1. Grass Lake (6-1)
The Warriors fell to Detroit Edison, the top-ranked team in Division 2, by a score of 65-50 last week, but responded with an impressive 89-64 road victory over Harper Woods Chandler Park, classified Saturday. Grass Lake entered the first edition of the Associated Press Michigan high school basketball rankings as the top team in Division 3, and for good reason.
They will face Napoleon (2-2) and East Jackson (3-1) this week before preparing for a showdown at the Cascades Conference with Michigan Center (4-0) next week.
