Conor McGregor could come back from his broken leg as a middleweight, coach John Kavanagh joked.
The Notorious has been out of action since breaking his leg against Dustin Poirer at UFC 264 in July.
Ireland’s McGregor has repeatedly posted footage of himself training on his upper body as he prepares for his eventual comeback.
He also opened up about his next possible fight and responding to ESPN reporter Marc Radimondi on Twitter, the Irishman made it clear what he wanted to happen.
McGregor posted: “Hey guys, there you go… clicks and the like. Your boss and what more. Mac. Santy Claus. “I’m facing whoever’s next to have that LW title. Do with it.
With current champion Charles Oliveira facing Poirer on December 11 at UFC 269, his next target will be known imminently.
But trainer John Kavanagh joked that his training could see him gain weight.
He told Submission Radio: “He’s coming back to Ireland and will be back on the mats with me in the next few weeks.
“He’s doing a lot of weight training right now, the guy is shocked, I think he will come back to middleweight!
“But we’re going to start over with combat sports training and drills, I joked him and said we should start with techniques, but he said he wanted to come back with five by five.
“He is enthusiastic, excited and optimistic to be back in 2022 and while I don’t know when he will be back, I know he will be back.”
And Kavanagh is aiming for improvements as he prepares to train with McGregor again.
He added: “It’s always interesting to face the same opponent because the techniques can change but the trends remain the same so what we have been working on we will continue to work on.
“You make adjustments every time and you try to improve yourself and the opponents can change.
“As long as the focus is on, like I always told Conor and all of my guys, the point is if you do a three month training block, then at the end of the three months , you could beat your old self, that’s really all you can do is try to improve yourself.
