‘It’s not if, it’s just when’ – Deontay Wilder insists clash with Anthony Joshua inevitable ahead of Robert Helenius comeback fight after Tyson Fury loss

Former WBC heavyweight champion Deontay Wilder thinks it’s only a matter of time before he faces Anthony Joshua

“The Bronze Bomber” is set to return to the ring this weekend for the first time since suffering back-to-back losses to Tyson Fury.

Wilder has been stopped by Fury in his last two fights

He will face Robert Helenius, who had high-profile wins over Adam Kownacki, Erkan Teper and Derek Chisora but suffered losses to Gerald Washington, Dillian Whyte and Johann Duhaupas.

None of the UK broadcasters have selected this fight for any of their pay-per-view channels yet. Therefore, UK fans will have to pay FITE.TV $14.99 (£13.58 at the moment) to watch the clash which takes place at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York on Saturday night.

Ahead of his comeback fight, the 36-year-old claimed an oft-discussed fight between him and Joshua will definitely happen before they both call it a day in their careers.

“I’m still in the business, Joshua is still in the business,” Kate Abdo said.

“People always say to me, ‘When are you going to fight Joshua?’ It’s still the biggest fight in the world between us. So it’s not “if”, it’s just “when”.

Joshua is currently looking for a return to the world title picture after suffering successive losses to Oleksandr Usyk, who now holds the WBO, WBA and IBF heavyweight titles.

Joshua is coming off two losses to Usyk

Talks for a ‘Battle of Britain’ bout with Fury recently fell through and ‘The Gypsy King’ has expressed reluctance to resume negotiations with Joshua in the future.

So the only other big fight on offer for Joshua is Wilder.

In 2018, the two teams failed to stage an undisputed fight when their heavyweights held all four world titles between them.

When they failed to make AJ against Wilder, bridges were cut between Hearn and American co-manager Shelly Finkel, but the Matchroom president tried to mend them in August by offering a fight offer.

However, no one answered him and Wilder later expressed his opinion that Joshua’s team approached him about a fight as they knew Usyk would beat their fighter in a rematch.

It remains to be seen when a fight between the two heavyweight stars will take place, but it could be sooner rather than later with both men running out of big name opponents to box against.
