‘It’s like he’s wearing a safety helmet’ – Tyrone Mings makes terrible mistake as Aston Villa defender’s header leads to Chelsea goal as Mason Mount capitalizes twice on star’s mistakes by Villans

Aston Villa’s terrible defense from Tyrone Mings gave Chelsea a first goal in their clash at Villa Park.

The centre-back – who is looking to secure a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the next World Cup – failed to clear his lines in the fifth minute of the game.

As the ball came towards him, Mings went to direct the ball.

But although he had plenty of time to effectively get the ball out of the danger zone, the defender’s header ricocheted towards his own goal rather than outwards.

Unfortunately for Mings, his goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez couldn’t help him and the ball landed in the way of Chelsea star Mason Mount.

The England midfielder got it right, firing the loose ball past the Villans keeper and into the bottom corner – leading to Mings raising his arm several times in apology.

“I have no idea what Tyrone Mings is doing,” former Arsenal star Perry Groves told talkSPORT.

“To be fair, it’s a very good finish from Mason Mount. Mings should head the ball out, he got the ball completely wrong – it’s like he’s wearing a helmet!”

Steven Gerrard’s side had been ahead and came close to scoring moments before Mings’ error, when Danny Ings put a fine ball in front of goal but was eventually cleared.

Following Mings’ error, the home side had a fresh flurry of chances before half-time, with shots on the woodwork and Chelsea stopper Kepa needing to make some fine saves to hold on to the lead of his team.

“Chelsea lead 1-0, but it’s all thanks to Kepa,” said talkSPORT reporter Abigail Davies. “It’s all Aston Villa here.”

Then, after putting pressure on the opposing team, things went from bad to worse for Mings, as he conceded a foul 20 yards from his own goal.

Again, it was Mount who took advantage of Villa’s defensive errors, and of course the England international doubled the Blues’ lead.

“That one was a banger too,” Davies told talkSPORT, “Mason Mount with that second goal, what a sublime goal.

“Lucky with his first effort of the match, not this one!”

Chelsea’s 2-0 victory marks their fifth straight win in all competitions, while Villa’s loss leaves them 1 point clear of the relegation zone.
