TalkSPORT pundits Darren Bent and Perry Groves were stunned by reports that Kieran Trippier will start England left-back against Croatia today.
The Three Lions Euro 2020 opener begins at 2 p.m., live on talkSPORT, with information about the starting XI appearing to be leaking this morning.
The main defensive title is that manager Gareth Southgate has reportedly selected versatile right-back Trippier to play left-back ahead of Luke Shaw and Ben Chilwell.
Responding to the news, Bent told talkSPORT: “That’s what frustrates me sometimes with the England team.
“Wait a second, do you pick a right-back to play a left-back in front of two very good left-backs who play there every week?”
“That’s what I don’t understand.
“Kieran Trippier, I understand he’s very good and very versatile, but we have two very good left-backs who have played in this position all season.”
Groves added, “How would you feel if you were Chilwell or Shaw?
“You say, ‘Wait a minute, we’re the two best left-backs in the country, both in good shape. “
“Chilwell was exceptional in the Champions League final.
“And also, in team form, I would rather have an average left-handed left-back than a very good right-handed left-back because it completely changes the angle of play.
“When it comes out on the left side, Trippier is always going to come back inside.
“Imagine Stuart Pearce if they said, ‘Sorry Pearcey, you’re not playing, Gary Stevens is playing left-back.’
“The dynamics of England in the team, I do not understand it. I can’t understand that, it doesn’t make sense for football. “
Bent concluded: “I’m with Perry, from a football point of view it just doesn’t make sense.
“Luke Shaw and Chilwell have been very, very good this season playing left-back.”
