Is your TV the right size? Follow these steps to find out.

Many decorating choices are subjective: they require trusting your instincts and following your personal taste. But others are more straightforward, like deciding what size TV is appropriate for a space. According to interior designers, there is actually a right answer to this particular question, which can be found via a simple mathematical formula.

1. Start by measuring the distance from the wall where you plan to hang your TV to where you plan to sit while watching it.

2. Convert this distance from feet to inches.

3. Now divide by two to get the right screen size for your room. For example, if the distance between your wall and your couch is 120 inches, your TV should be around 60 inches. (TV screens are measured diagonally.)

TJ Monahan, founder of Designed Happy, an architecture and interior design firm in Kensington, Maryland, also advises paying close attention to the height at which you mount the TV. “You want it to be as close to eye level [while viewing] as possible,” he said. “Most wall-mounted TVs are probably hung too high.”

The further away the couch is, the less distracting a screen that’s too high will be to look at, but ultimately, he says you’ll start to feel like you’re “front row in the movie theater.”
